Xiaomi unveils the Mi Note 2 to fill the Note 7 gap

Xiaomi chose the perfect time to release its Mi Note 2, the successor to its Mi Note, which was an obvious take on the Galaxy Note. Why was the timing perfect? With the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 wiped away from the market due to several explosive incidents around the globe, the smartphone market has opened up for other brands, Apple inclusive, to fill the big gap Samsung leaves.

The Mi Note 2 takes direction from Samsung with a 5.7-inch OLED display curved on both sides. The phone has a sleek curved-body design on the front and the back. It packs in the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The lower model offers 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The battery, as Xiaomi loves to do, is a whopping 4,070mAh equipped with Quick Charge 3.0 and a USB Type-C connector.

With regard to camera, Xiaomi has gone away from the market norms. The Mi Note 2 comes with a grandiose 22.56MP camera from Sony at the back, the IMX218 Exmor sensor and a f/2.0 lens. You can also shoot video up to 4K with EIS digital stabilisation. It works through a dedicated 3-axis gyroscope with the promise of excellent real-time jitter compensation. A hybrid PDAF and contrast autofocus system along with a dual-tone LED flash and Xiaomi’s proprietary low-ligh and long-exposure technologies should make for beautiful photography. It will be interesting to see how the Mi Note 2 stacks up against the iPhone 7, Galaxy S7 and the Pixel.

On the front side, the Mi Note 2 packs in a 8MP camera that comes with autofocus, has an aperture of f/2.0 and promises to take improved group selfies and includes Xiaomi’s Beautify 3.0 mode.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will come in a couple of variations. The top-of-the-line model has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and will sell for about Dh1,896), complete with Google Play Services. The cheaper version gives you a 4GB plus 64GB model for about Dh1,516). We can expect the prices to not change too drastically when they reach our market and we can also expect it sooner rather than later thanks to Xiaomi selling its phones here officially through Etisalat.
