“I am a man of fortune, and I must seek my fortune.” – Henry Avery
One of the many inspirational quotes in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End you’ll come across, this one appears pretty early in the game when our first impressions of the game are being constructed. Uncharted 4 is the culmination of watching Nathan Drake, our protagonist, on his journey from risk-taking young adventurer to a mature adult (still risk-taking) fortune-hunter.
Nearly five years in the making, it’s finally here. UC4 comes out in shining glory after following a difficult path of staff changes, production issues, changes in scripts, and launch date delays. But from what I’ve seen so far in the game, it was definitely worth it.
Uncharted 4 starts out in showy fashion, with a chase scene (of course) on the high seas. People are obviously shooting at you (Drake), but you’re busy maneuvering a boat through waves twice its size. Fortunately, you have an elder brother this time, Sam. It gets intense, and soon the game cuts into the past showing their childhood, and then back into the future, to Drake’s current boring, salvage hunting, suburban and married life.
The visuals and storyline are nothing short of stunning and engrossing. So far these are some of the best visuals in a game I’ve seen (on a console, before you PC fanatics jump at my throat). The gameplay cuts seamlessly between running and shooting, to cutscenes with some clichéd but entertaining dialogue and scenarios. New adversaries and even more amazing locations are some of the things to look forward to in this game.
There’s also an amazing number of Sony references in the game. You will catch glimpses of the Xperia Z5, the original Sony PlayStation, and other tidbits. Some of these you can even use. No spoilers though.
“We receive the due reward of our deeds.” – Saint Dismas, another “protagonist” of the game, and very aptly quoted for those who get this game.
I’m about nine hours into the game, and I’m still not bored. It’s impossible for me to be. Keep a lookout for a comprehensive review of the game soon, once the single player story mode has been completed and the multiplayer mode has been experimented with. The game is out tomorrow, May 10 releasing to retailers, local and online.
