New category launched with an eye on the UAE’s National Reading Initiative

UAE-based online retailing major has launched its Global Bookstore. Visitors to the site can now pick and purchase from a selection of more than six million books. The move was carried out in line with the UAE government’s National Reading Initiative, which aims to establish a national framework that helps prepare a generation of readers, reinforcing its position as a capital of content, culture and knowledge.

Souq’s Global Bookstore features a phenomenal assortment of works covering classifications including culture, children, family, education and business.

According to a recent survey by the Arab Reading Index, people in the UAE read for around 57 hours a year, well above the average of 35 hours for the rest of the Arab world. They also read 24 books a year compared with the regional average of 16.

E-commerce in the Middle East is continuing to show robust growth, supported by the acceleration of m-commerce. According to a 2016 report by global consultancy AT Kearney, the e-commerce market in the GCC is expected to grow to $20 billion (Dh73.4 billion) by 2020 from $5.3 billion in 2015.
