Sony Expands Xperia Range at MWC 2018

Sony Mobile announced two new mobiles at MWC 2018 for its flagship range. These are the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. Both models come with improvements to its cameras, displays, audio technologies and a new design.

The Xperia XZ2

The flagship device features an extended 5.7-inch HDR, Full HD Display with 18:9 screen ratio. It uses Sony’s Bravia TV technology, called X-reality for mobile, to allow users to watch existing HDR content and even allow upscaling of content to near HDR.

The XZ2 also incorporates a new haptic experience, using something called a Dynamic Vibration System, which analyses audio data and lets you feel the action in your hands. This would all be pointless without excellent front-facing stereo speakers so Sony included those as well, and thoughtfully added S-Force Front Surround Sound. High-quality audio is also provided using DSEE HX technology for upscaling.

The Xperia XZ2: Camera Capabilities

With a newly developed dual camera and Sony’s fusion image signal processor, which makes real-time processing possible, it allows image capture in extremely dark conditions thanks to an ISO sensitivity of 51200 for photos and an ISO of 12800 for video, which only exists in current interchangeable lens cameras. As a result, the images and videos come out with much less noise and less visible blur in low-light conditions.

The XZ2 gets the world’s first 4K HDR Movie recording in a smartphone. Super slow motion video recording is also upgraded with 960fps in Full HD. The Motion Eye camera brings great still photography features with intelligent control features such as Predictive Capture with motion and smile detection, Autofocus burst and Predictive Autofocus.

One really cool new feature is the Xperia XZ2’s 3D Creator application. This lets you create 3D scans of objects and faces in under a minute using the main camera, and also now lets you create 3D scans of yourself using the front camera. Post-processing is now available to achieve even greater quality of 3D scans. Plus once you’ve finished your 3D scan or selfie, you can now post directly to social media.

The Xperia XZ2: Design and Performance

The XZ2 comes housed in a brand new design with a fluid 3D glass surface giving off a sense of seamless form. It is also protected by a metal frame and Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Thankfully the phone is also certified IP65/IP68, and can withstand splashes, spills and is protected against dust. The device comes in four colours: liquid silver, liquid black, deep green and ash pink.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform powers the Xperia XZ2 with the help of a sizeable 3,180mAh battery. The battery is extremely power efficient thanks to features such as Smart Stamina, STAMINA mode, Battery Care and Qnovo Adaptive Charging technology. It also supports wireless charging.

The Xperia XZ2 Compact

The XZ2 Compact is the same as its larger sibling in every aspect but size. It comes with a 5-inch HDR Full HD+ 18:9 extended display. The only other variants are the colours it comes in: white silver, black, moss green and coral pink.

Both the Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and will be available with all major retailers from March.
