Among all the devices we saw at the Samsung virtual Unpacked, the Galaxy Z Fold2 was probably the most hotly anticipated. While we saw glimpses of the next-generation foldable, more information is coming on September 1, when pre-orders for the device start.
Samsung has taken into consideration all the feedback it received from last year’s Galaxy Fold with this upgrade. The bezels of the smartphone are much thinner and the inner notch we saw last year is replaced with a single punch-hole. On the front of the device, you find a 6.23-inch HD+ 60Hz display with a 25:9 aspect ratio. Accompanying the front is also a 10MP selfie camera. Inside, the Galaxy Z Fold2 sports a 7.6-inch FHD+ 120Hz panel. Instead of using a thin polymer on the display, the Z Fold2 comes with Ultra Thin Glass. There is also another single punch-hole 10MP camera on the inside of the device. In combination, you get a more immersive experience with the Galaxy Z Fold2 whether you are using the outer or inner panel.
As for the hinge of the Fold2, it sees an upgrade. There is still a small gap on the smartphone when folded however this is required for the UTG on the panel. But with the Galaxy Z Fold2, you get the same Flex mode feature we first saw on the Galaxy Z Flip. This means you will be able to open the device between a 90-degree and 120-degree angle with the display staying in place. Bio-metrics wise, you retain the fingerprint scanner. The capacitive button is found on the side of the phone doubling as the power button. You find the volume buttons above the power button and thankfully, no return of the dedicated Bixby button. Something unique is that Samsung will let you customize the hinge color on the Galaxy Z Fold2 however this may be a regional affair. In any case, we will hear more on September 1.
The Galaxy Z Fold2 comes with a camera setup similar to that of the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note20. It comprises of a triple 12MP wide setup with OIS, 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP telephoto setup, although some reports say it will sport a different 48MP telephoto setup found on the Galaxy S20 series. This unsurety is due to Samsung still being tight-lipped until September 1 about certain features of the smartphone. Interestingly, if the telephoto sensor is not the same as the one found on the Galaxy S20 or Galaxy Note20, you will not get Space Zoom or 8K video recording.
On the front, you are looking at identical 10MP sensors. Both the front and rear cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold2 will support 4K video recording. But aside from this, it is same to expect a selfie camera experience similar to that of the Galaxy S20 or Galaxy Note20.
When it comes to processing power, the Galaxy Z Fold2 is a flagship all-around. We find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor on the phone alongside 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS storage. Moreover, you find a 4,500mAh battery on the phone, bringing back the dual battery setup we first saw on the Galaxy Fold. Here, there is support for 25W wired, wireless and reverse wireless charging.
Pricing and availability
Thus far, very limited about the smartphone’s pricing and availability is known. We know the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 will be up for pre-order on September 1 which is also the day we will learn more. For now, we can only expect a price tag similar to that of the first Galaxy Fold but anything lower would ideal.
