Samsung Galaxy Note9 users in the UAE begin receiving One UI update

Samsung's One UI is a step in the right direction

It is always exciting when your smartphone receives a major software upgrade. As of today, Samsung’s Note9 users in the UAE can get the latest One UI update atop Android 9.0 Pie.

What is One UI?

A revamp from the company’s previous Experience Launcher software, One UI aims to harmonize software and hardware. It is a proprietary skin in which many of Samsung’s applications have been streamlined. There is a focus on one-handed usage with vivid colours that are less straining on the eye.

With it, the South Korean manufacturer wants us to interact with phones naturally. Information is clear and displayed in an easy to read manner. Additionally, a software element called Focus Blocks helps to group related information together.

How to check for One UI?

On your Galaxy Note9, head over to Settings -> Software update to check for this update.

Its file size is approximately 1.6GB coming with January’s security patch and other changes alongside the major One UI overhaul.

We have spent a couple of hours with the software on our Galaxy Note9. Frankly, the changes are refreshing and convey a sense of uniformity. For example, a lot of Samsung’s stock applications follow a common design style.

Similarly, the camera application has undergone a much required change. Its Scene Optimizer can now easily be toggled on/off and we think certain visual elements make are the cherry on top. Above all, we finally get gesture support for navigating the phone.

It is different compared to other interfaces and we think getting used to it requires time. One UI’s multitasking pane is similar to Android 9.0 Pie’s stock one but using the gestures feels a bit clunky. Moreover, animations are not as smooth as they can be with a few stutters. We think this might be to do with the optimization, which may better itself with time. So we are not giving our final verdict on the experience just yet.
