GTA V Online players have been reporting in-game messages stating that GTA VI will launch in 2019. The developer of the series, Rockstar Games, addressed these rumours and confirmed that they are fake and not from any official channels.
The reports were spotted on Reddit and the GTA Online forum. The message, which read “Rockstar Message GTA VI Coming 2019”, appeared to many players during online sessions, which was then all over social media. The Rockstar Support Twitter account was bombarded with questions to which the company officially replied, confirming it’s a hoax.
Rockstar Games still have not confirmed how this hoax message started to spread. However, the Reddit community has attributed it to a skilled hacker who is using mods and a flaw in the Rockstar Social Club’s messaging system. This could also be why the messages were more prominent on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, platforms where mods are more prevalent.
Rockstar Games is known for building up a game release with teasers and rumours, making this a very out-of-character move. Additionally, announcing GTA VI like this would also be problematic for Red Dead Redemption 2, another popular Rockstar title, set to release in October this year. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, rumours suggest that a PC port is also under works.
