A week after its official launch in the US, Canada and New Zealand, Pokemon Go – the world’s latest addiction, has crossed more 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store.
While that figure doesn’t reflect the total number of active players, it is pretty insane that the Play Store shows it in the 10,000,000 – 50,000,000 category of downloads.
The figures for Pokemon Go on Apple devices are still unconfirmed but it is known that Android and iOS downloads in the US alone have crossed 7.5 million.
Despite being officially available in only three countries so far, the app, which lets players hunt cartoon creatures in the real world using augmented reality technology, has become a global phenomenon. This is largely thanks to an avalanche of media coverage covering unique aspects of the game.
One player stumbled upon a dead body. There are professional Pokemon catchers advertising their services on Craigslist. An imgur screengrab that shows a Pidgy sat next to a woman entering labour went viral.
Users outside the official countries have been bypassing Google Play to download the free-to-play game through APK mirror websites.
