At an event scheduled for January 13, OnePlus is expected to discuss a new screen technology in Shenzhen, China. So far, we do not know what the event could be about. But from speculation, we may see the company’s first 120Hz refresh rate screens.
OnePlus 8 lineup?
Some rumours suggest that we may see the upcoming OnePlus 8 series announced at this event. But this would be less than three months after the release of the current 7T flagship series, which does not make sense. Plus, by doing so, OnePlus would break its May and October release cycle that we have grown accustomed to over the years.
Likely a short briefing
We have never had OnePlus smartphone launches outside of their cycle. Just last week, we saw OnePlus announce its new Concept One. And going by this trend, tomorrow’s event may just a be a short briefing focused on the new 120Hz screens. Or maybe, it could be a Concept One implementation on a front panel rather than just a lens for the camera.
In either case, the company seems fully committed to high refresh rate displays. Last year, co-founder Carl Pei also mentioned that all future OnePlus devices will come with at least a 90Hz refresh rate panel.
Impact on battery life
While higher refresh rate panels are great, they will inevitably drain more battery when in use. And as such, it would be great if OnePlus works to improve battery performance as well.
We have seen an influx of fast charging solutions of late, however a more durable battery would also be welcome. A sodium-ion battery as opposed the conventional lithium-ion one could be on the cards. And maybe with the higher refresh rate panel, OnePlus could innovate on that front too.
