The bezel-less smartphone display comes with arguably a few sacrifices. You either have to live with a blemish like a tear-drop style notch on Huawei’s P30 Pro or a pin-hole style cut-out like on the Samsung Galaxy S10+. Otherwise, you probably need to embrace mechanical parts on your smartphone like Oppo’s pivot-hinge or the pop-up style selfie camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro. We’ve even seen swivel cameras and flip-out cameras like on the Asus Zenfone 6 but they may not last too long.
Oppo has the answer
Yesterday, Oppo showcased its new under-display selfie camera technology. The video goes on to show a notch-free prototype smartphone on a desk. It seems the camera application was launched which subsequently showed us a live view of the ceiling of room. Just to add credibility to the technology, the user also hovers their finger over where the supposed selfie camera lies.
If this technology comes to effect, it would eliminate the wear and tear associated with a smartphone’s moving parts. And undoubtedly, a lot of users would prefer this solution over the current ones we have. However, Oppo’s VP Brian Shen later went on to clarify how this technology cannot match the results of current day selfie cameras. But then again, no new technology is born perfect.
Xiaomi is in on it too
Not long after Oppo’s post, Xiaomi also gave us a sneak peak at the future. In a video, the post shows off a prototype Mi9 sans a notch and with similar under-display front facing camera technology.
Allegedly, the clip was shot last month so we cannot tell how close we are to seeing this out in the wild. But neither Oppo nor Xiaomi has given us anything on when this will make it to the consumers’ hands.
