We checked out the Samsung Galaxy S10 series at MWC 2019. The phones have been on pre-order for the last week but yesterday, they were officially launched at a regional event.
Dynamic AMOLED display
One of the biggest changes around the trio of Galaxy S10 smartphones is the display. Samsung claims this is its best screen yet delivering vivid digital content with a wider range of colour. According to DisplayMate, it clocks a peak luminance of 1,200 nits and a 0.4 JNCD accuracy at DCI-P3 colour gamut. On the design front, Samsung has used its unique Infinity-O display technology. With it, all relevant sensors and the front camera are packed into a hole-in display to maximise screen real estate.
But aside from leveling up its display, the South Korean manufacturer also bundles the first-ever in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. It can read 3D contours of your finger for better security over traditional 2D images. And it comes with the world’s first FIDO Alliance Biometric Component certification.
Ultra-wide and AI camera
With all three Galaxy S10 devices, you get an ultra-wide 16MP 123-degree field of view lens. This is a first for Samsung’s S-series helping you take big panoramas and impressive landscape shots. To complete the dual-camera set-up on the Galaxy S10e, you will find an additional 12MP wide lens whereas on the Galaxy S10 and S10+, there is not only the wide lens but also another 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.
To implement AI, the Galaxy S10 uses a neural processing unit (NPU). This lets users take professional-grade photos without manually changing camera settings. And with Samsung’s Scene Optimiser and Shot Suggestion, the camera can accurately recognise scenes and provide recommendations for better framing when taking photos. On the video side, the Galaxy S10 offers Super Steady video recording with digital stabilisation. Both the front and rear cameras can shoot up to 4K-quality video and the rear camera even gives you the flexibility of recording in HDR10+, an industry first.
Hardware and ecosystem
Coming with Samsung’s Exynos 9820 octa-core processor and up to 12GB RAM, the Galaxy S10 series is equipped for high-end gaming and speed. It uses the next-generation Wi-Fi 6 capable of downloading and browsing at 2.0Gbps speeds. For storage, you will find up to 1TB of memory on board with the option to expand by another 512GB via microSD card.
Other things such as the rugged IP68 water and dust resistance, Samsung Pay and DeX all make a return. But this time, the phone is bundled with Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and Wireless PowerShare. This lets you charge Qi-certified devices using the S10’s back.
