Android 8.0’s official name is… Oreo

Every year the naming of Google’s Android versions is a ceremony. This year it’s one too, but with a bit of a twist. Firstly, we’ve got the live stream and secondly, it’s in New York.

Unlike last year, we haven’t seen naming competitions in 2017, but the guessing game was on of course.

Well Google couldn’t have chosen a better moment than after a once-in-a-century solar eclipse to announce the name of its latest version of Android.

Android 8.0 Oreo

Right as the eclipse ended, the presentation began with a large Oreo appearing out of cocoon-like object nestled near the live display.

This isn’t the first time Google has partnered with a food company for an Android name

The presentation on the screen went on to show the promo video stating that Android Oreo is “safer, smarter, more powerful and sweeter than ever”. Check out the presentation below.
