A big leak from Google confirms wireless charging for Pixel 3

The leaks for the Pixel 3 have been trickling in over the last few months with little confirmation on specs aside from the usual guesswork. Wireless charging has been missed in Google’s flagship brand. Until now. The 9to5Google guys picked up new code contained within the latest Google App update pointing to wireless charging functionality for Pixel 3 devices.

Pixel Stand: Wireless Charging for the Pixel 3

The leak comes via a string of code referencing a new smart Pixel Stand. It will operate similar to a smart speaker by gaining access to your Google Assistant. After pairing with the Pixel, the phone’s display becomes a contextual, glanceable screen in response to the questions asked. This functionality will require the user to give explicit permission to access this data. As the new Google app code reveals:

<string name=”trusted_dock_action_text”>I Agree</string>

<string name=”trusted_dock_cancel_text”>No thanks</string>

<string name=”trusted_dock_message”>Your Assistant can use your personal info to make suggestions, answer questions, and take actions for you when your phone is locked and on your Pixel Stand</string>

<string name=”trusted_dock_title”>Get personalized help when your phone is on your Pixel Stand</string>

The wireless charging bit comes into play via a previous version of the Google App update launched in June. Code within that version gave away Google is working on a wireless charging dock codenamed Dreamliner. Given neither the Pixel nor Pixel 2 have wireless charging, their development suggested it must be for the Pixel 3. Now we have the Pixel Stand.

A previous leak of an alleged Pixel 3 XL prototype and renders for both Pixel 3 phones stated Google will switch to a gloss and matte glass back casing. Both previous Pixel generations came with a metal and glass back. Wireless charging requires ideal conductivity within a phone’s casing and the glass back ensures this.

Pixel just keeps getting better and better and we can’t wait to find out more from its official launch towards the last quarter of the year.
