Technology solutions for those of us living in the Gulf will now be developed at home.

A new Innovations Lab is to be set up by Ooredoo and Huawei in Qatar, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a special ceremony at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The facility will be based at Ooredoo’s Qatar Data Centre 5. It will develop, test and demonstrate a range of next generation IT and communication solutions, including Mobile Broadband, 5G, digital transformation, Internet of Things solutions, 4K video enhancements, and more. It is set to host some of the most advanced communication solutions and cutting-edge experimental technologies.

The joint innovation lab will not only be a platform for proof-of-concept projects, but will also demonstrate innovative solutions to relevant partners, enabling them to assess and ultimately new technologies to enhance their business performance.

Waleed Al Sayed, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo Qatar said: “This is an important step forward for Ooredoo, for Qatar, and for our future young technology leaders, creating a research hub within our country that will explore the cutting-edge of network technology.”

“Advances in network technology are delivering faster speeds and a better online experience, but more than that they are helping to transform our digital lifestyles and supporting the growth of the Internet of Things. We are proud that Huawei is making a significant contribution in Qatar through our joint work with Ooredoo,” says Eric Xu, Rotating CEO of Huawei.

The MoU outlines the companies’ joint intent to open an advanced facility that will contribute to Qatar’s knowledge-based economy and help train and develop the next generation of technology leaders.

As part of the agreement, Huawei will provide full technical support for Ooredoo’s research at the lab, including offering training courses and supporting knowledge transfer between the two companies. Huawei and Ooredoo will also collaborate on a joint implementation process for new young talent in Qatar, as well as regularly organising technical and management training to deliver sustainable results.
