Microsoft kick started E3 2018 with its Xbox Conference on Sunday. The company had major announcements for upcoming titles in their popular franchises, as well as a few third-party titles. Microsoft also hinted at a new console coming soon. Fifteen world premier titles and 18 exclusive titles were shown during the Microsoft keynote.
A lot happened at the keynote, so here are some of the top announcements by Microsoft at E3 2018.
Microsoft showcased a brief cinematic trailer for the sixth game in the Halo franchise, which will see the return of Master Chief. The trailer was played at the beginning of the keynote, but nothing more was revealed.
Gears of War 5 and Gears Pop!
Microsoft’s Gear of War franchise gets a new addition with Gears of War 5, which will be set right after Gears of War 4. A cinematic trailer showed us Gears of War hero Kait Diaz and will take the series back to its roots.
Additionally, Gears of War will be coming to Android and iOS mobile devices with Gears Pop! The Funko Pop inspired game will be the first mobile game for the series and is being developed in partnership with Funko Pop. Gears of War figures are a big part of Funko Pop’s gaming collections, with about 16 different figures and variants available to purchase.
Microsoft revealed the much-awaited futuristic game, Cyberpunk 2077. Developed by CD Projekt Red, the team behind the Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in an anarchic future where citizens are forced to live in. The trailer showcases hacking, futuristic cars and fancy weapons. There is no information regarding a release date as of now, but the trailer seems quite impressive.
Eagle eyed fans also noticed a couple of game codes in the trailer, that turned out to be the game code for the Game of the Year edition of Witcher 3.
Just Cause 4
A new trailer confirmed rumours that Just Cause 4 was indeed in works. The new trailer showed the latest addition to adrenaline-fueled, explosion-filled series taking a dark turn that could be quite intriguing. There are new additions to the game, including weapons and cars. However, the biggest addition could be tornadoes, which the player will have to deal with.
Dying Light 2
The next game in the open world zombie survival franchise, Dying Light 2 will come with new features and ideas that will improve gameplay. For example, one of the developers mentioned that any decision the player takes will have a direct impact on the game environment. Microsoft showed us a trailer of the parkour-inspired game, along with some gameplay.
The Division 2
The sequel to the post-apocalyptic survival game, The Division 2 will be set in Washington, DC. Microsoft revealed a new trailer for the game that talks about corruption and the survival of the nation, while a gameplay trailer hinted at two rival groups engaged in furious combat. The trailer also showed famous monuments, as well as a crashed Air Force One.
The Division 2 is set to come out on March 15.
Devil May Cry 5
Nero returns in the latest addition to the Devil May Cry series and will be set after Devil May Cry 4 instead of DmC: Devil May Cry. Microsoft showed the trailer for the Capcom-developed game and hinted at a spring 2019 release.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
The epic conclusion to the rebooted Tomb Raider origin series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider might be centered around Mayan myths. The action-adventure title was showcased by Microsoft and will have gameplay that is a mix of set-piece traversal, combat with more traditional series puzzle solving. While the first two games were developed by Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix’s Edios Montreal will be taking over for the third instalment.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider comes out on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 14.
Microsoft also showcased a brand-new game called Jump Force, which will bring together all major anime characters for a three-on-three tag team fighting game. These include Naruto, Goku from Dragon Ball Z, Monkey D. Luffy of One Piece and even Light and Ryuk from Death Note. The trailer showcased iconic locations from the anime series, as well as real-world locations. However, it is yet to be confirmed where the game will be set.
Jump Force will release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019.
New Xbox Console and Studio
While wrapping up, Xbox chief Phil Spencer talked briefly about the company’s plans for its next console. He said that the team is “deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to deliver the benchmark of console gaming”. Additionally, he mentioned that the team is also focusing on AI and cloud technologies.
He also announced that Microsoft has acquired four independent studios — Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Undead Labs and Compulsion Games — and is building a new internal studio known as The Initiative.
From the looks of it, Microsoft and Xbox seem to have a pretty decent line-up in the pipeline. Sequels to fan favourites, new titles and the potential for a new console might be the saving grace for Xbox.
