Leaked video shows new iPhone without headphone jack

It’s that wonderful time of year when we’re served up a new rumour for the upcoming iPhone at least once a week. The latest one goes a step further in confirming one of the oldest, and quite dreaded, potential new features of the latest iPhone line-up: say goodbye to the 3.5mm headphone jack. A series of images and even a video show the Apple EarPods with a Lightning connector.

Apple has never been afraid to turn the tables on all the norms and reinvent the way things should be done. The removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack is their latest gambit in coming up with a sleeker device that’s more dependent on Apple’s ecosystem. As great as wireless earphones and headphones may be, a good one will cost you dear and wireless audio still hasn’t become the norm. Not wanting to completely annoy its users, Apple will have to pack in a wired alternative of the EarPods, and so we see these leaked images of a Lightning connected version. Of course, the Cupertino-headqurtered company will also come out with its own adapters for users who refuse to ditch their expensive Beats for a new iPhone (oh what a conundrum).

Lightning ports are already capable of outputting digital audio and don’t forget, this is how all iPod docks work, so any concern over audio quality with this change is unfounded. At the end of the day, you’ll have pundits arguing over what’s better but for all us regular music listeners, the differences will be minor at best.
