Notches on phones are the official love-hate trend of 2018 flagships. Trust Chinese manufacturers to innovate phone designs that give you maximum screen real estate, with camera intact but without a notch. The Vivo Nex gave us the first look at how it’s possible and now the Oppo Find X (it’s first real flagship in four years) takes it a step further.
Oppo Find X: Design
With a whopping 6.4-inch OLED display, the Oppo Find X is mostly screen with curved edges and a very sleek pop-up camera that pop up from the back. Oppo claims it has a screen-to-body ratio of 93.8 percent.
So how’s this work? The camera system is entirely hidden when the camera app or the phone are not on. As you switch the camera or phone on, the entire top section of the phone very sleekly motorizes up. It reveals a 25mp front-facing camera, a 3D facial scanning system, and 16MP + 20MP dual rear camera.
Does that mean you have to sacrifice quick photo taking for a notch? Oppo claims the camera can open in just 0.5 seconds.
Oppo Find X: Function
Using the pop-up camera system for its front and rear cameras, Oppo has managed to create a phone, that for the first time in a long time, has no rear camera bump. It can lie perfectly flat on any service and keeps the precious camera safe from scratches.
Unfortunately there’s no fingerprint authentication system, another very unique function of the Oppo Find X. Every time the phone comes on, the camera pops up for a 3D facial scan to unlock the phone. You would think it would even more time to the whole process but first looks suggest the system works great, even with multiple on-offs.
Everything else inside the Oppo Find X is what you would expect from a 2018 flagship. It comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB RAM, with up to 256GB of storage. The battery measures in at a decent 3,730mAh and Oppo’s VOOC fast wired charging. The Find X will run Android 8.1 Oreo with Oppo’s Color OS customizations out of the box.
Oppo Find X: Pricing and Availability
The Find X is the first Oppo phone with a global rollout consisting of Europe and North America, in addition to its home ground in South East Asia. The phone is available to order in China with market-specific pricing and availability yet to be announced.
Current pricing is said for the 256GB Oppo Find X is said to be at a whopping €999 (Dh4242.07). Whether there will be cheaper versions is yet unknown.
