Apple launches a new iPad and (RED) iPhone

(RED) returns

When Apple’s online stored went down last night, everyone suspected we’d wake up to the company’s spring launches. Well, that’s what happened. We’ve got a new iPad and two (RED) iPhones.

iPad 2017

The new iPad for Dh1,299. Whoah

The new iPad comes with a brighter 9.7-inch Retina display, the Apple-designed A9 chip with 64‑bit “desktop-class architecture”, ten hours of battery life, iOS 10 and LTE capabilities. All this sounds pretty familiar. The real showstopper in this announcement is the price: Dh1,299. The device will come with 8MP cameras on the front and back, Touch ID for fingerprint reading and security, and Apple Pay 3, which isn’t yet available in the UAE.

“iPad is the world’s most popular tablet,” said Philip Schiller, Senior Vice-President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple. “Customers love the large 9.7-inch display for everything from watching TV and movies, to surfing the web and enjoying photos, and now it’s even more affordable.

“New customers and anyone looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, in school and for work, with its gorgeous Retina display, our powerful A9 chip, and access to the more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for the device.”

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (RED)

Apple also launched the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (RED) special edition devices. While we don’t need to tell you too much about the devices, here’s a little history of Apple’s work with (RED):

Apple has worked with (RED), which was founded in 2006, for more than a decade, contributing over $130 million (Dh477.75 million) out of the $465 million the foundation has raised in the fight against AIDS. (RED) uses contributions from the company to provide access to life-saving ARV medication in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Since we began working with (RED) ten years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products, from the original iPod nano (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition all the way to today’s line-up of Beats products and accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (RED) Special Edition will be available in 128GB and 256GB models starting at Dh2,999 on March 24 from and Apple Stores, and from Apple Authorised Resellers and select carriers. Prices may vary.
