Kindle Oasis 2019 Review: The best e-reader on the market?

Kindle Oasis 2019
The Kindle Oasis 2019 is now in the UAE

If you’re looking for a new e-book reader here in the UAE, you’re bound to find yourself looking at the Amazon Kindle series. We recently reviewed the latest Kindle 2019. We discussed how it creeps into the territory of the Kindle Paperwhite and makes it a tough choice for most. Well the same concept comes around when you keep the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis in mind. Before we jump into comparing the two, lets talk about the Kindle Oasis 2019 for a min.

Kindle Oasis 2019: What’s new?

The new Oasis looks identical to the previous generation model. Available in a graphite colour, the aluminium back panel of the device shows that you’re buying the most premium reader in the entire series. The Kindle has a one-inch bezel on one side and a 1/4 inch bezel on the other three. The larger bezel also houses two rubber buttons which act as page turners.

The Kindle works whether you use it in its intended right-handed orientation or left-handed. The only reason I say ‘intended’ is that while the holding the Oasis 2019 right-handed the power button is on the top corner and it’s unfortunate type-B charging port is on the bottom corner.

While it is a known fact that the Kindle Oasis has a battery that can last you weeks if managed properly. Mine has stayed up to that claim in its second week now. For example, its claimed 6 weeks battery-life is based on brightness at half, half an hour of reading a day and wireless off. Also the fact that you have to carry an old type-B cable on you to charge it is quite an annoyance too. Type-C would have been heavily welcome on this new Kindle.

Warmer display

The main ‘new’ feature on the Kindle Oasis 2019 is the 7″ screen’s colour adjustability. Now while it might look like one small feature but it makes a boatload of difference to the reading experience (at least it did to me). A mix of the higher 330 ppi resolution (1680×1264) with the new colour temperature feature, gives you the ease and more importantly the similarity to actual paper that you would need while reading.

This is the only Kindle which has an amient light sensor and adjusts for you when you move from a dark scenario to a lit one. This feature also gets amplified thanks to the 25 LEDs behind the display. Of the 25, 12 are white and 13 are amber, allowing the colour adjustability. Blue-light filters have been around the world of smartphones for a while now and if they make no difference to you, then you might want to save some money getting the earlier Kindle Oasis.

Wireless capability still includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for audiobook listening and connectivity to download and sync books respectively.

Kindle Oasis 2019: Daily Use

In the initial days of using the Kindle Oasis 2019, I wasn’t a fan of the entire weight being one-sided. I didn’t like that if I had to change hands while holding the device, I had to rotate the entire device. As the days went by, I stopped minding it as much. The weight distribution of the device actually tires the hand out much lesser than the regular Kindles do, thus lesser switching of hands.

The Oasis’ one-sided weight takes a bit of getting used to but makes sense once you get the hang of it

A snappier Kindle

The Kindle Oasis 2019 is definitely snappier than its siblings thanks to its improved E Ink tech, better display and processor. That being said Amazon does need to work on the Kindle’s OS. It takes a bit of getting used to for a new user and it really could use a refresh in the near future. Maybe a quick OTA update Amazon?

A comfortable read

Reading comfort is top-notch on the Kindle Oasis. Like I mentioned earlier, the yellow tinge on the display really adds the feel of actual paper from a book which is very comforting to view for long hours. Text is crisp and clear and adjustability of fonts is definitely an advantage for those who need it.

A durable one

The Kindle Oasis 2019 is IPX8 water and dust resistant like its predecessor. So whether you’re hands are moist thanks to the humidity in the UAE, or dust collects while you’ve left the Kindle on a table for a day or you just want to enjoy a soak in the bath while reading, your Oasis will be perfectly fine.

Now I don’t really use Audiobook functionality on Kindles or any gadget for that matter. So I can’t comment on Bluetooth Audio connectivity at the moment.

A long-lasting reader

In my two weeks of usage of the device, battery-life has been great. This coming from a person who has been careless with the device. I haven’t switched off Wi-Fi since I set it up nor have I bothered with adjusting brightness. I’ve been reading between 30 to 60 minutes almost everyday. My battery at the time of writing this review is 47%. So clearly if one is careful, they can easily get weeks from their Kindle Oasis.

Should you buy one?

Now in our local market, a Kindle is pretty much your main option in terms of e-readers and that’s not a bad thing in any respect possibly.

If you’re new to the world of e-readers and don’t want to blow a hole in your pocket, I suggest getting your hands on the Kindle Paperwhite. It’s cost to feature ration is phenomenal.

A definite purchase if you’re looking for the best in the market

If you already have the previous Kindle Oasis, there’s really no need for you to upgrade unless you feel the ambient lighting would make a genuine difference to your reading experience.

But if you’re in the market for the best e-reader in the market, there’s nowhere else to look but the Kindle Oasis 2019. Its durable aluminium finish, water-resistance, crisp, clear and comfortable reading experience make it worth that premium cost.

With two storage options, the Kindle Oasis 2019 costs Dh999 for the 8GB version and Dh1099 for the 32GB version.
