IFA 2018 kicked off in Berlin over the weekend and Sony is showcasing an array of its latest products. The Japanese tech titan is on a mission to enhance creator and user engagement thanks to a new corporate direction: “Getting closer to people,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, President and CEO of Sony Corporation.
Here’s what we’ll get better looks at from Sony at IFA 2018:
Sony will unveil the newest addition to the 1000X series of wireless noise-cancelling headphones. The new WH-1000XM3 model comes with improvements to the brand’s noise-cancellation technology with a newly-developed HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1, which reportedly boasts four times greater performance. The QN1 processor can negate low-range noises from airplanes and can cancel mid- to high-range noise such as street clamour and human voices.
Sony is diving into sports with the WF-SP900 true wireless sports headphones. It’ll be waterproof and dust proof with internal memory included. Going retro on the internal memory inclusion coupled with it being waterproof gives swimmers a nice option.
Next comes Sony’s Signature Series. It includes the DMP-Z1 digital music player and the IER-Z1R in-ear stereo headphones. DMP-Z1 utilises a high-output analog amplifier and a unique independent power system delivering premium sound quality. The IER-Z1R will come with a frequency response of up to 100kHz playback that promises to deliver a high level of immersive audio.
Sony announced a new Bravia Series called the Master. It’ll be available in Europe from September and should eventually make its way to our shores. The AF9 series of 4K OLED TVs and the ZF9 series of 4K LCD TVs will come equipped with Picture Processor X1 Ultimate – it will features close to twice the real-time processing capabilities of Sony’s current high-end models.
The AF9 series incorporates Pixel Contrast Booster. It’s meant to faithfully reproduce pictures with deep blacks and high luminance. It will also feature Acoustic Surface Audio+, a unique and advanced audio technology that will allow users to realise new immersion levels through the addition of an actuator to the center of the screen. A TV Center Speaker Mode makes the sound audible right from the center of the screen.
Seed Acceleration Programme (SAP)
The Sony Seed Acceleration Programme creates start-up projects and supports their business operations. The FES Watch U was a product born out of this project. It will be available for purchase in Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain from mid-September with no news on when it will debut this side. The FES Watch U is a fashion watch that uses e-paper on the watch face and wrist strap. It allows users to switch between their favourite designs at the push of a button.
Another combination of technology and fashion comes in the form a new prototype shoes. The new concept will be showed off at IFA 2018 with an outsole and N logo whose design can be changed. These were developed using the 247v2 shoes from New Balance.
AI x Robotics
Sony’s autonomous entertainment robot aibo will be displayed for the first time in Europe this IFA. It was launched in Japan this January. Aibo has reached over two million units produced and shipped, and is set to launch in the US this September. Sony is doubling down on AI and robotics. It’s working on several projects showing steady progress. The company says it will continue delivering new ideas that expand the possibilities in the field of electronics thanks to a combination of its imaging and audio technologies, sensors, and mechatronics with AI, robotics, mobile communications and more.
