Huawei’s P10 and P10 Plus are a photographer’s delight

The new flagships are sleek and come in eight colours

At the ongoing MWC in Barcelona, Huawei has made the P10 and P10 Plus official. Both handsets feature an industry first Diamond-Cut finishing, in addition to the sandblast and gloss finishes. The minimalist, sleek design is manageable at just 6.98mm thin with no protruding camera. The handsets also sport a front fingerprint sensor replacing the navigation bar for faster and more ergonomic touch gestures. For multimedia, both the 5.1- and 5.5-inch displays are protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and have narrow bezels. The larger display of the P10 Plus is Quad HD in resolution for added detail with the P10 running a Full HD panel.

Under the hood, both devices run Android 7.0 Nougat with an improved EMUI 5.1 bringing greater optimisation. The Kirin 960 processor also boasts a 180 per cent improvement in performance and a 40 per cent increase in power efficiency. Added features such as machine learning and Huawei’s Ultra Memory anticipate RAM usage and load frequent applications faster to enhance the smoothness in experience. The 3,200mAh and 3,750mAh batteries on the P10 and P10 Plus respectively also support Huawei’s SuperCharge technology and a 5-gate protection mechanism to monitor battery temperatures and voltage.

But the main focus of these flagships is their camera. The P10 features the new Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 while the P10 Plus sports the Leica-Dual Camera 2.0 Pro. Both the 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and the 12-megapixel RGB sensor deliver superior and artistic photography features to a smartphone. Functions such as 3D facial detection for enhanced portraits, a smart imaging algorithm to apply studio-like re-lighting and beautifying effects and a natural bokeh are present as well. The Pro variant on the P10 Plus boasts SUMMILUX-H lenses and a larger f/1.8 aperture for improved low-light function.

Huawei offers eight colour choices

The front also features a world’s first Leica lens with a new f/1.9 aperture and an 8MP sensor for exceptional selfies and self-portraits. The lens can automatically detect a group selfie and can change to a wider angle mode as well. The improvements are intensified with GoPro’s co-development in the P series for Huawei. Both phones boast Highlights, a mobile video editing tool complete with transitions and music tracks.

Being the first phones to support 4.5G networks, the devices come with four antennas alongside two antennas for Wi-Fi connectivity. The additional antennas improve coverage even in locations where signals are weak. Huawei’s HiGeo technology also improves offline navigation using multi-sensory predictive tracking and offline big data.

The Hyper Diamond Cut-finished smartphones will be available in dazzling blue and dazzling gold while the sandblast finish includes greenery, rose gold, mystic silver, graphite black and prestige gold finishes. A ceramic white variant is also said to be available in the high gloss finish. In addition to the smartphones, Huawei also unveiled its Watch 2, a smartwatch that offers 4G technology in a stylish form factor. While all of Huawei’s latest range will be available starting March, pricing for the UAE is yet to be confirmed.
