Is this HTC’s future Vive VR smartphone?

Will native virtual reality be at our palms this year?

The virtual reality (VR) front is under constant development. While we think it will could go mainstream this year, there weren’t too many surprising announcements at CES 2017. Previous rumours pointing to a second-generation HTC Vive were debunked. However, a recent video showed us a glimpse of a major new VR product from HTC. Have a look and see if you can spot it.

At the end of the promotional video, there seems to be an image of a new smartphone from HTC. It is branded as the HTC Vive and makes an appearance for a few seconds. For those who didn’t see it, here it is.

This looks to be a smart step from the Taiwanese manufacturer. Implementing native VR into smartphones would not only be a great technological feat but would also make these handsets the focus of VR development, as opposed to pricier alternatives.

In fact, past industry trends strongly point towards consumers favouring portable experiences. According to some estimates, Samsung’s Gear VR requiring a smartphone to function outsold many high-end platforms including HTC’s Vive, PlayStation’s headset and the Oculus Rift. It seems consumers are willing to sacrifice quality for convenience and HTC’s leaked Vive smartphone may bridge this gap.

The company has Something for U planned for later this week and this leaked video may be a part of it. If the Taiwanese giant is planning a virtual reality device, it could present competition to both Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Daydream. In either case, we are likely to find out exactly what the company is planning on January 12. Are you interested in a smartphone dedicated completely to VR?
