GoPro finally launches new Hero5 Black and Session action cams

GoPro jumped back into the game it revolutionised with a long-awaited addition to the Hero line-up with the GoPro Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session. The Hero5 Black has gone through a major overhaul compared to its predecessors packing in most of the rumoured new features: It is natively waterproof, meaning no casing is required down to ten metres below. It’s got a two-inch touchscreen, packs in GPS and voice support in seven languages at launch (with more to come) so you can command it to start and stop recording among other things. The 12-megapixel camera shoots in 4K up to 30fps and in 1080p up to 120fps. It also supports RAW image capture.

The Hero5 Session, GoPro’s more economical offering, can shoot 4K video and has optical image stabilisation

GoPro has also updated its Session camera as well. The Hero5 Session also records 4K at 30fps and has a ten-megapixel camera. It’s also natively waterproof and comes with voice support just like the Black. What you lose with the Session is the touch display, GPS and support for RAW images, though you do get a more compact body in return.

Both cameras come with electronic image stabilisation that should result in steadier shots when you’re doing crazy flips over sand dunes or wiping out in a surf lesson. They’re both also compatible with GoPro’s latest mounts so you won’t need to buy a whole new set if you’re planning an upgrade.

The Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session are both cloud connected. This was another rumoured feature for GoPro’s latest action cams and it has come to fruition. The cameras will automatically upload all shots and footage to your account in the cloud while it charges. You can also view, edit and share your media from your smartphone or computer. The GoPro’s cloud service comes at a cost of $5 (Dh18.5) a month though and is only available in the US at launch. We can hope GoPro brings it to UAE shores soon. The Hero5 Black will retail for Dh1599 and the Hero5 Session at a cool Dh1199.

Both cameras, along with their Hero4 predecessors, are compatible with the new GoPro Karma.
