Google’s Pixel 3 series has seen an unprecedented level of leaks leading to its October unveiling event. We’ve seen what the Pixel 3 and 3 XL will look like in several renders. The Pixel 3 XL was even spotted in the wild. A leak in July teased wireless charging is on the horizon for the new Pixel phones called the Pixel Stand. Thanks to leaks from the Google App now we have more confirmations on its existence and features.
Pixel Stand: Functionality
Google’s APK v8.22 teardown has revealed the Pixel 3 phones will come with a wireless charging dock called “Pixel Stand”. Buried deep in the code there’s a short animation illustrating how the phones will work with the Pixel Stand. The teardown also reveals extended functionality including Slideshow and a different Google Assistant interface too that will come with notification functionality. The animation reveals messages, alarms, calendar notifications, as well as music.
The previous leak was thanks to a string of code in the Google App as well. The Pixel Stand will function similar to a smart speaker by gaining access to your Google Assistant. After pairing with the Pixel, the phone’s display becomes a contextual, glanceable screen in response to the questions asked. This functionality will require the user to give explicit permission to access this data of course.
Since previous Pixel models don’t come with a glass back or the wireless charging antenna, only Pixel 3 owners will be able to take advantage of the Pixel Stand’s functionality. We’ll know a lot more at the October 9 event taking place in New York.
