Yesterday we got a first look at the Dyson Corrale, the brand’s first hair straightener and their third hair-styling product. The Dyson Corrale is a wireless hair-straightener which comes with a 30-minute battery-life and Dyson’s patented ‘flexing plates’.
“The Dyson Corrale straightener elevates styling results, while dramatically reducing the heat damage on hair. It builds on our learnings about the science behind hair health which we’ve been accumulating since we first started developing the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer. We have been worried about the style results and heat damage from flat plate straighteners. We invented plates that flex and which conform to the precise profile of the tress, applying even heat and correct tension to all the hair strands, keeping them aligned. This means that we get an enhanced styling and without excessive heat damage.” James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer
Dyson Corrale – Hair Science
Like the Supersonic and the Airwrap before it, the Dyson Corrale comes with a whole lot of research and development behind it. Oh and a £100 million (Dh485.5 million) investment into the whole thing too!
To straighten hair, a combination of heat, tension and control is required – heat to break the hydrogen bonds in the hair, tension and compression to reshape these bonds and control to apply the heat and tension evenly.
Dyson’s extensive testing highlights that flat plate straighteners can only apply heat and tension to the thickest part of the tress and this means that towards the edges of the tress there are loose strands which are not treated or tensioned. These become flyaways and are only brought into the tress through repeated passes, by which time excessive heat has been applied to the tress, which causes a reduction in hair strength, gloss and colour.
The Dyson Corrale comes with an innovative solution for this problem.
Dyson Corrale – Main Features
There are three main features of the Dyson Corrale you need to know about. It’s flex plate technology, it’s intelligent heat control and its battery-life.
Flex Plate Technology
Like its mentioned above, traditional hair straighteners press upon the the hair to apply the heat on the hair to straighten them. The unique flexing plates of the Dyson Corrale straightener mould to shape and gather the hair, giving the user greater control and therefore elevating the styling results, whilst reducing the reliance on heat. As the plates adapt to the hair, they apply tension more evenly and stop strands splaying. This greater control allows outstanding styles to be created with less reliance on heat, reducing damage by 50%.
Dyson has developed a complex manganese copper alloy plate, featuring a carefully balanced amalgamation of six metals to provide the optimum flexibility, strength and thermal conduction. Each plate is precision machined to 65 microns – the width of a human hair – and tourmaline edged to produce ionising properties that help reduce static.
Intelligent Heat Control
The scientists at Dyson found out that while all straighteners have various temperature control settings, the real time temperature being delivered from the plates varies due to different factors.
To control the fluctuation in temperatures, the Dyson Corrale comes with a platinum sensor which measure the temperature a 100 times a second. This Intelligent Heat Control technology is the same found in the Dyson Supersonic and Airwrap and communicates with a microprocessor which in turn controls the heating system delivering precise, accurate heat.
The Dyson Corrale straightener has three precise heat settings – 165°C (330°F), 185°C (365°F) and 210°C (410°F). These temperatures allow the user to tailor the settings to suit their hair type and desired style. This adaptability, combined with the increased control provided by the flexing plates, allows users to style at lower temperatures without compromising on the results.
The Dyson Its al features a four-cell lithium-ion battery, born out of the technology used to make their vacuum cleaners cord-free. The Corrale gives users a 30-minute battery-life cord-free and takes 70 minutes to charge fully. That being said, it charges to 90% in 30 minutes.
The cord is magnetic and swivels so that it can adapt to your movements rather than you adapting to its while straightening your hair.
Dyson’s extensive research and development show all through the Corrale. An example of that is flight mode. Yes! A straightener with flight mode. On the center of the Corrale is a little tab which can be pulled out. Once done, the straightener can’t be accidentally switched on while in your luggage. This might seem like a tiny detail but it goes to show the extent to which Dyson considers various factors when creating a product.
Dyson Corrale – Pricing and Availability
The Dyson Corrale is currently available directly on www.dyson.ae for Dh1,999. It is also available in major retail outlets in the UAE but it is to be noted that the Purple version of the Corrale (in the images above) is only available via Dyson.ae.
