Samsung Electronics just unveiled its latest innovation at CES 2019. Yes, it’s TV-related but one unlike you’ve seen before. It’s called Micro LED technology, which forms the basis for a next-generation modular television-viewing experience.
What is Micro LED mean?
These new innovative displays are made up of individual modules of self-emissive Micro LEDs, featuring millions of inorganic red, green and blue microscopic LED chips. These in turn emit their own light to produce brilliant colours on the screen, delivering an unmatched picture quality.
While the technology was previewed last year at CES 2018, in the form of a 146-inch screen nicknamed The Wall, there have been significant technological advancements since then. Thanks to upgrades in the ultra-fine pitch semiconductor packaging process that narrows the gap between the microscopic LED chips, the Micro LED display now comes in a smaller, more user-friendly 75-inch size.
Consumers can still go for any size they want thanks to the modular nature of the new displays. By adding Micro LED modules, screen sizes can be modified to suit aesthetic or room size requirements.
Content is automatically optimised for whatever screen size you choose. Even if you decide to go bigger, the displays scale to add more resolution, while maintaining pixel density.
No ratio is weird for the new Micro LED displays. Whether it’s the standard 16:9 or widescreen 21:9, or even odd ratios such as 1:1 and 32:9, the display adjusts accordingly. This is all done with no compromise to picture quality.
Last but not the least, its bezel-free. Yes, a TV without borders. Even while adding more modules, the result is a seamless screen with no breaks or lines in between.
Price and availability
As of the announcement, Samsung will start sales to consumers this year. Initially, it will only be released in the US, but worldwide sales could follow soon.
We still have yet to hear anything about pricing, but stay tuned to hear more on these absolutely stunning Micro LED displays.
