Announced today, the Apple Watch Series 6 features notable hardware improvements coupled with its software in watchOS 7. The lineup is Apple’s most colourful yet encouraging customers to be more active, stay connected and better manage their health. Alongside this, we also saw Apple announce a more affordable Watch SE, packing essential features into a modern design
Apple Watch Series 6
Building on the capabilities of previous Apple Watch models, the Watch Series 6 is able to measure the oxygen saturation of a user’s blood using clusters of LED and photodiodes on the back crystal of the Watch. Oxygen saturation, more commonly represented as SpO2 is the percentage of oxygen being carried by red blood cells in your body. By being able to monitor this data through the Health application, you can better understand overall fitness and wellness.
The Watch Series 6 also improves on hardware, using a new dual-core processor based on the A13 Bionic chipset in the iPhone 11. This upgrade S6 SiP runs up to 20 per-cent faster while maintaining the same all-day battery life. You also get the U1 chip and Ultra Wideband antennas for short-range wireless location to support new experiences.
This year, there is also more choice with the Watch Series 6, with notable colour options being a new blue colour and a (PRODUCT)RED exclusive. The series also brings with it three all-new band styles including the ultralight Solo Loop stretchable band. There is also a braided Solo Loop variant available as well as a first-of-its-kind Leather Link band.
Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE is the ultimate combination of design, function and value. It features a Retina display that is 30 per-cent larger than the Series 3. Inside, you find the S5 SiP and a dual-core processor for fast performance, up to two times faster than the Series 3. You also find the latest speaker and microphone optimised for better sound quality alongside Bluetooth 5.0
Just like the Watch Series 6, the Watch SE has the next-generation always-on altimeter and a more power-efficient barometric altimeter. And as for health, you are covered with Emergency SOS and Fall Detection. To provide more insight into hearing health, the Watch SE can even use its next-generation microphone to measure ambient sound levels and warn you if surrounding sounds are loud enough to cause damage.
Family Setup and watchOS 7
Both the Apple Watch Series 6 and SE feature the latest watchOS 7, which brings options for in-depth personalisation. You can benefit from new face options as well as understand health and fitness features including sleep tracking, automatic handwashing detection and new workout types to name a few.
Extending the software experience is Family Setup, where kids and older family members can use an Apple Watch without having an iPhone. By setting this up, kids can take advantage of communication capabilities and enjoy Activity rings and new school modes optimised for them. For older adults, watchOS 7 features a simplified on-boarding and configuration process with a refreshed X-Large face and a new Health Checklist.
