The Momentum 2.0 is the second attempt by Sennheiser to try and appeal to on-the-go amateur audiophiles by tweaking the original pair of Momentums. With Sennheiser, the problem has never been sound or build quality. The brand excels at these two factors. However, there were users who complained that the fit would become uncomfortable over long periods of time and that they weren’t portable enough.
These new head-cans look beautiful for starters. We had a classic ivory Momentum 2.0 over-ear wired headphones set in for review, and they were beautiful from the moment they were unboxed.
At first glance, the headphones are both more visually striking and larger than the old version. Sennheiser changed the pads to be significantly bigger along with larger cups as well. The feel of the materials over the ears is premium and lush. They don’t pinch anything, giving you an added sense of comfort. The pads are designed with memory foam, topped with leather and perform better than expected. The same finishing can be seen with the headband as well. Another major change is that these beauties fold onto themselves, becoming more portable than their predecessors.
Despite their size, these headphones are surprisingly light and still manage to sit snugly on your head without falling off. The distribution of the cushioned pads over your ears is spread just right and ensures use even during movement. As with the last model, the cable is removable and the wired remote works perfectly fine with our Android phone even though the buttons are designed for Apple devices.
The Main Event
Performance wise, the Momentum 2.0 is stellar as always. The bass is powerful and exciting with these headphones and it’s amazing how deep it goes without sounding too forced. The treble is nicely defined as well, though at times it does feel a little sharp. But the more you listen to it, the better it sounds.
Pure audiophiles will obviously be able to tell the subtle differences between this pair of headphones and those in the higher end, but then again, Sennheiser didn’t mean this set to be part of the elite HD sound clan. The Momentum 2.0s are nothing less than perfect for everyday use for those who are constantly on the move and the fact that they are collapsible and come with a beautiful little carry case means that they are definitely clear winners in this segment.
Overall, these headphones are great for anyone looking at a pair of headphones in this category. The wired version retails for about $350 (Dh1,300) while a wireless set goes for about $500 a pair.
