Amazon will launch a touchscreen Echo

Alexa wants to take over the world

There’s a new, more interactive Amazon Echo on the horizon. According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is poised to reveal a reimagined Echo with a touchscreen. Expect a seven-inch display with a camera on top and a speaker underneath. It’s a glorified Echo with a touchscreen and new features, including the ability to make internet-based phone calls. It is suggested that the new device could serve as an intercom between Echo devices and Echo users. That could be nifty if you know enough of people with an Echo.

This would be the fifth instalment in Amazon’s Echo series. The original Echo is the flagship with smaller variants in the form of a smaller Echo, the Dot and the Tap. Amazon recently unveiled the slightly different Echo Look. It comes equipped with a camera and helps you decide what to wear and gives fashion tips. The new rumoured device will be the first of its kind with a touchscreen. It’s not much to look at though. It can easily be mistaken for a small digital ad display or a digital frame with a speaker.

Amazon has been a pioneer in the smart speaker industry. Its main competition today is Google’s Home and Microsoft just joined the party partnering up with Harman Kardon. Bose launched a smart speaker that’s compatible with Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri. Audiophiles are going to love what Bose and Harman Kardon are offering. Purists will, of course, go for their favourite assistant. Apple fanboys won’t have to wait too long though. Rumours have suggested that Apple is also working on a Siri-powered smart speaker that could be unveiled at this year’s WWDC. The competition is about to heat up for Amazon and it’s gearing up without wasting any time.
