It seems that UAE residents have woken up to an early Eid gift, with WhatsApp calls now working in the country.
You can now reach out to loved ones, your boss, colleague, clients, mascots, etc. using the free WhatsApp calls service. Open a conversation with anybody on WhatsApp, click on the phone logo at the top-right of the screen and you’re good to go.
WhatsApp calls in the UAE
Video and voice calls came to WhatsApp officially last November but us UAE residents haven’t had access to it yet.
“Voice calls through WhatsApp are blocked in compliance with the UAE’s telecommunication regulations that allow VoIP services to be provided in the country only by licensed telecom operators,” du said in a statement to Gulf News last year.

The TRA on Twitter have confirmed that their policies on VOIP calls have not changed. An update from Whatsapp bypassed their protocols and they will be updating it soon to reinstate the block on Whatsapp calling.
Well that was fun while it lasted…
