On this day 20 years ago, Google.com was registered as a domain name, according to Icann, an organisation responsible for regulating domain names. According to the website, Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997.

Bill Clinton was still US president. Hong Kong gained independence from the British. The iPod didn’t exist yet.

If you’re curious to see what it looked like in the 90s, just search for “Google in 1998” and the bottom page should pop up. It reflects just how search results would look back then.

Even though Google registered the domain in 1997, it didn’t launch the website until September 27, 1998, which the company considers its actual birthday. So much has changed for the search engine giant since the late 90s. Almost every aspect of the site has been improved or transformed in some way. The only things that remain constant are the colours in the logo and the clean white background.
