OnePlus may be releasing a new variant to its current flagship, the OnePlus 3, if a leak on Chinese social media Weibo is to be believed. The OnePlus 3 was released earlier this year and now a new OnePlus 3T will be launching with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor. The only other incremental change expected is the screen will be LCD instead of OnePlus’ usual AMOLED due to a current shortage in the market. OnePlus maintains it will stick to Optic AMOLED for all future phones, so this is definitely a one-time change.
It’s an odd time for an update but some processors make it worth introducing a new device altogether. Almost all other aspects of phones these days, such as the camera, get updated through software with the processor being the major hardware component that requires an upgrade. The Snapdragon 821 is Qualcomm’s latest iteration promising a number of significant upgrades.
It’s codenamed the OnePlus A3010 and will come with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB of built-in storage, a 16MP rear camera with LED flash, a Sony IMX298 sensor, 8MP front camera, fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C connectivitiy, a 3,000 mAh battery with the OnePlus Dash Charge. For OnePlus fans hoping for a new design over the stale OnePlus 3, you’re out of luck. The design is to follow in the same steps as the current OnePlus 3. Considering the timing of the release, we can expect OnePlus’ OxygenOS to run Android’s Nougat right out of the box. The price should also be the same as the OnePlus 3 and with its old invite system out the window, everyone will be able to get their hands on the phone as soon as it’s out.
